How to care for Hydro-Dipped Surface (And Make Them Last Longer)

Hydrographics (aka hydro dipping or water transfer printing) is one of the most eye-catching ways to customize your car, bike, helmet, or interior trims. But just like a custom paint job, how you maintain your hydro-dipped part decides how long it stays sharp, glossy, and damage-free.

At Hydrographics, we don’t just design – we educate. Here’s your  essential guide to keep hydro-dipped parts looking new for years.

  1. Use pH- Neutral Car Shampoo for Cleaning

Avoid harsh cleaners or household detergents. These can break down the clear coat protecting the design.

What to use:

  • Automotive pH-neutral shampoo
  • Soft microfiber wash mitt

Avoid:

  • Acidic cleansers
  • Dish soap
  • High-pressure nozzles at close range

2. Avoid Prolonged Sun Expousre

Hydro-dipped are usually clear-coated for UV resistance. But just like car paint, constant UV rays will fade col0rs over time.

Tips:

  • Park under shade or in a covered garage
  • Use a car body cover if parking outside daily
  • Consider ceramic coating for extra UV protection

3. Don’t Dry-Wipe Dust or Dirt

Dragging a dry cloth dust created micro-scratches, just like it does on car paint.

Use:

  • Quick detailer spray
  • Clean microfiber cloth

Never wipe with:

  • Tissues, old rags, or dry hands

4. Protect the Clear Coat Finish

The durability of a hydro dipped item depends heavily on the quality and care of the clear coat.

Scratches or dullness here = design damage.

Optional Upgrades:

  • Add ceramic coating for extreme durability
  • Use paint sealants every 3 months

5. Avoid Extreme Abrasion or Friction

Hydrographics are not invincible. Friction-heavy areas like footrests or bike tanks can show wear if not protected.

Protect with:

  • TPU PPF on high-touch area
  • Avoid rubbing with belts, rings, or sharp tools

6. Maintenance Every 6-12 Months

Just like car detailing, hydrographics need routine TLC.

  • Use detailing sprays to restore gloss
  • Re-wax or ceramic every 6 months if needed
  • Inspect for chips or scratches and get touch-ups done early

Bonus Tip: What NOT to Do

  • Don’t use petrol, thinner, or brake fluid to clean anything – these destroy the hydro layer instantly
  • Don’t use polish compounds unless you’re 100% sure the clear coat is strong enough

Give Your Custom Finish the Care it Desrves

Hydrographics can last 5+ years if cared for right. Whether it’s a dashboard, tank, alloy, or console – regular care = long-lasting finish.
